UAE plunges on implementing RoHS standards

UAE has declared its entry on implementing a regulation on Restriction of Hazardous substances (RoHS). UAE RoHS took effect on April 28, 2017. UAE RoHS focuses both on RoHS and WEEE provisions. The UAE regulation focuses on to control or limit presence of the following hazardous substances on electrical and electronic devices.

  • Lead (Pb)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent chromium (Vi)
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
  • Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE)
  • Bis (2-ethyhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
  • Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

Implementation Timelines

The UAE Government strictly adheres to the prominent timeline on the implementation of RoHS directive

Jan 1, 2018: Use of Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr), PBB, and PBDEs Other EEE’ — including cables or spare parts for the repair, the reuse, the updating of functionalities or upgrading of capacity of EEE placed on the market, except products in general lighting.

Jan 1, 2020: Restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE in medical devices, in vitro diagnostic medical devices, monitoring and control instruments and industrial monitoring and control instruments and products in general lighting.

Restrictions on DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP in EEE including cables, spare parts for repair, the reuse, the updating of functionalities or upgrading of capacity of EEE.

Jan 1, 2022: Restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE in cables and spare parts of products of medical devices, vitro diagnostic medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, industrial monitoring and control instruments placed on the market.

Restrictions on DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP in cables and spare parts of medical devices, in vitro diagnostic medical devices, monitoring and control instruments and industrial monitoring and control instruments.
