22 Chemical substances soon to be prioritized by OEHHA’s DARTIC

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has recently announced a meeting to be held in December 2020 to discuss the prioritization of 22 chemical substances that are expected to be harmful. The Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DARTIC), a state qualified experts committee on reproductive toxicity for purposes of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) will hold the meeting publicly through virtual mode.

The list of chemicals or chemical groups that are going to be prioritized are as follows:

● Benzophenone-3

● Bisphenol S

● Diazinon

● Diethyl phthalate

● Domoic acid

● Glyphosate and its salts

● Manganese

● Neonicotinoid pesticides

1. Acetamiprid

2. Clothianidin

3. Imidacloprid

4. Thiamethoxam

● Parabens

1. Butylparaben

2. Isobutyl paraben

3. Methylparaben

4. Propylparaben

● Per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFASs)

1. perfluorooctanoic acid (PFDA)

2. perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS)

3. Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)

4. Perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA)

● Titanium dioxide nanoparticles

● Vinpocetine

● Zearalenone

The prioritizing of the above-mentioned chemicals will be done based on the advice provided by the DARTIC to OEHHA which will be used for listing consideration in future meetings through a prioritization document. OEHHA informed that no listing decisions will be made at the meeting. Also, according to them, this prioritization document is a recent application of the usual prioritization process. DARTIC committee claims that the evidence of hazard used in this current round of prioritization is based on the epidemiologic data screen and an animal data screen. OEHHA will present initial analysis details on the scientific information obtained through some preliminary toxicological & screening- level researches.

The public comment period will be ended by 16th November 2020. OEHHA will forward the public comments to DARTIC for discussion. After the meeting, the OEHHA will prepare the hazard identification materials list by evaluating the reproductive toxicity effects of the mentioned chemicals to DARTIC, which will continue its work on further research to make a listing decision.
