The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on December 28, 2021, that they are allowing petition from Six North Carolina Health and Environment Organisation to compel the testing of certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

As per the reports on October 19, 2021 memorandum, the EPA published The National PFAs Testing Strategy.

As per the Testing Strategy, it identifies the priority substances at several phases of an iterative approach based on the grouping of chemicals by chemistry features and available toxicity data.

These priority substances include several PFAs including those in the petitions.EPA now orders the PFAS manufacturers to conduct and fund the following studies that will provide toxicity data and information on categories of PFAS.

  1. 1. Near-Term Testing – covers 30 of 54 Petitions chemicals
  2. 2. Subsequent Testing – cover additional 9 of 54 petition chemicals
  3. 3. The remaining 15 of 54 Petition Chemicals – do not fall under the category of PFAs defined by The National PFAs Testing Strategy – EPA will further collect data for further Testing
  4. 4. Mixtures Studies – EPA studies the toxicity of PFA mixture from individual toxicity Data
  5. 5. Human Studies – EPA studies the exposure and outcomes of PFAs on Human
  6. 6. Analytical Standards – EPA has requested comment on whether to require the submission of existing analytical methods for PFAS under a separate rulemaking that the Agency expects to issue in final next year.
