New Prop65 Factsheets has been included by Californian government on One Household & Two Flame retardants

Recently, OEHHA has explored chemicals that are used in some household appliances and flame retardants are added some proposition 65 factsheets. Factsheets usually includes basic information of chemical, hazardousness & measures to prevent exposures of those products in real life for the safety of the public. They always available in the proposition 65 warnings website which has been controlled by the Californian government.

Listed below the new prop65 fact sheets:

●  Tris(2-chloroethyl) Phosphate (TCEP)

●  Penta-bromo-diphenyl Ether (Penta BDE) Mixture [DE-71 (Technical Grade)]

●  Household Appliances

Some Basic Information on the chemicals of the new fact sheets which are recently updated are below.

Tris(2-chloroethyl) Phosphate (TCEP)- TCEP is a flame retardant. It has been included on the Proposition 65 list because it can cause cancer. Exposure to TCEP may increase the risk of cancer. TCEP can be gradually released from products treated with TCEP into indoor environments, including houses, schools, day care centres, offices, and cars. Once TCEP is released from products, it is present on floors, furniture, and other surfaces, and in air and dust. During pregnancy, TCEP can pass from mother to baby.

Pentabromodiphenyl Ether (PentaBDE) Mixture [DE-71 (Technical Grade)]- It is also a flame retardant. n 2006, California banned the manufacture, processing, or sale of products with more than 0.1% of penta BDE. It can be released into air, soil, and water from waste disposal sites that handle treated items such as foam mattresses, upholstered furniture, or plastics from electrical and electronic products. It may be present in and around industrial sites where it was produced or used in the past. It is on the Proposition 65 list because it can cause cancer. Exposure to this mixture may increase the risk of cancer.

Household Appliances- It is difficult to generalize about chemical exposures from household appliances, because each one is different. Some household appliances may expose us to chemicals on the Proposition 65 list such as benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and some flame retardants and phthalates. Appliances that use natural gas, such as ranges, dryers, and hot water heaters, may emit benzene, carbon monoxide or formaldehyde when in use. Benzene is present in natural gas, and carbon monoxide and formaldehyde are created when natural gas is burned. Some flame retardants and phthalates may be present in plastic components of appliances, including casings, and in electronic and electrical parts such as printed circuit boards, wires, and cables. These chemicals can be released into the air and accumulate in dust.
