EU added 4 new substances to the ROHS substances of very high concern list, also now referred to as ROHS 3 or EU directive 2015/863.

Previously ROHS had only 6 SVHC on their list. They are

  1. Cadmium
  2. Lead
  3. Mercury
  4. Hexavalent chromium
  5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
  6. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

The new substances that are added are:

  1. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
  2. Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
  3. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  4. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) of phthalates groups

Except Cadmium, all other 9 SVHC substance are restricted to use only by 0.1 % or 1000 ppm by weight of the total homogenous material. For Cadmium it is 0.01 % or 100 ppm.

ROHS 3 has added 11 categories of products in their list. These include electronic and electrical equipment not covered under the other categories such as

  • 2-wheeled vehicles
  • Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) such as e-cigarettes, cannabis vaporizers and vape pens
  • Electrical cables that are rated for less than 250V (working voltage)
