The Biocidal Products Committee adopted three opinions on active substance applications, committee does not approve methylene dithiocyanate for use in slimicides as it poses an unacceptable risk to the environment.

Methylene dithiocyanate is not approved for use in slimicides (product-type 12) as it is very toxic to aquatic life and can lead to long-lasting effects leading to environmental risks, according to the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECO) committee.

The committee recommends that (13Z)-Hexadec-13-en-11-yn-1-yl acetate, a pheromone used in repellents and attractants, be approved (product-type 19). However, it believes that the approval should be restricted to the specific use and application method specified by the applicant. 

The committee concluded that the renewal of propiconazole in wood preservatives (product-type 8) meets the exclusion criteria because the substance is toxic to reproduction and an endocrine disruptor. However, if one of the exclusion criteria derogations is met, it may be approved.

The following four positive opinions on Union authorizations were adopted by the committee:

1. 1. Propan-1-ol for use in human hygiene (product-type 1) 
2. 2. Propan-2-ol for use in disinfectants and algaecides 
3. 3. L-(+) Lactic acid for product-type 2
4. 4. Active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for product-type 2.

The European Commission, with the EU Member States, will make the final decision on active substance approval and Union authorization of biocidal product families. The opinions will be available on the BPC’s web page shortly.
