On 9 Feb 2021, the Öko-Institut e.V. Institute for Applied Ecology has released an update on the renewal of nine exemptions in Pack 22 of the RoHS consultation. The Institute also informed that this consultation would end by 3 March 2021.

The Institute has been working on behalf of the European Commission for the evaluation of applications for granting, renewing, or revoking exemptions, to be included in or delete from Annexes III and IV of the new RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2) in the name of RoHS projects. Recently the project called “Pack 22” launched in Dec 2020 for the evaluation of 16 industry requests for renewal of the following nine exemptions listed in Annex III of the EU RoHS Directive, per Article 5(1) (b) of EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.

• Exemption 6(a)/6(a)-I  for the lead as an alloying element in steel for machining purposes and in galvanized steel containing up to 0,35 % lead by weight

• Exemption 6(b)/6(b)-I  for the lead as an alloying element in aluminum containing up to 0,4 % lead by weight, provided it stems from lead-bearing aluminum scrap recycling

• Exemption 6(b)-II  for the lead as an alloying element in aluminum for machining purposes with a lead content up to 0,4 % by weight

• Exemption 6(c)  for the copper alloy containing up to 4 % lead by weight

• Exemption 7(a)  for lead in high melting temperature type solders (i.e. lead-based alloys containing 85 % by weight or more lead)

• Exemption 7(c)-I  for electrical and electronic components containing lead in a glass or ceramic other than dielectric ceramic in capacitors, e.g. piezo-electronic devices, or in a glass or ceramic matrix compound

• Exemption 7(c)-II  for lead in dielectric ceramic in capacitors for a rated voltage of 125 V AC or 250 V DC or higher

Following was the recent update via a new document that has been made for the RoHS consultation of the above nine exemptions of the Pack 22 project:
