China has officially released a new national standard, GB17675-2025: Steering System of Motor Vehicles — Basic Requirements, issued on 2 December 2025. The standard will become mandatory on 1 July 2026 and was issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and the Standardization Administration of China (SAC).
Purpose and Scope of GB17675-2025
The standard establishes technical and safety requirements for steering systems in motor vehicles, aiming to improve road safety, vehicle reliability, and global compliance. It applies to all mechanically steered road vehicles, including passenger and commercial vehicles.
Key Requirements
GB17675-2025 specifies:
- General technical requirements — performance and safety criteria
- Performance testing — static and dynamic steering system tests
- Design and engineering controls — robustness, feedback, failure mode management
- Safety margins — ensuring responsiveness and structural integrity
These requirements help ensure safe, high-quality steering systems across all vehicles in China.
Implementation Timeline
The standard will be enforced from 1 July 2026. Manufacturers, suppliers, and testing agencies should ensure that design, production, and validation processes comply before the effective date.
Implications for the Automotive Industry
- Vehicle manufacturers must align steering designs with the new requirements.
- Suppliers and system integrators should verify component performance meets GB17675-2025.
- Testing and certification bodies must update protocols to include the standard.
GB17675-2025 supports China’s regulatory framework while promoting technological advancement and international competitiveness.
