Client

A consumer product brand selling on Amazon wanted to add an interactive 3D experience to its product listings and create a more engaging way for shoppers to explore the product.

Project Scope

APA Engineering developed Amazon-ready GLB/GLTF 3D product models directly from existing CAD files, using product images and reference data where required. The workflow focused on producing lightweight, web-optimized assets aligned with Amazon’s published 3D model requirements.

Why APA Engineering?

APA Engineering combined CAD engineering expertise with 3D visualization experience to bridge the gap between engineering data and an interactive digital product experience. The team worked across SolidWorks, STEP, IGES and other CAD formats while maintaining product accuracy, visual fidelity and web performance.

Key Design Challenges

  • ● Convert engineering-grade CAD geometry into a lightweight, web-optimized 3D asset without compromising product accuracy.
  • ● Optimize polygon count, file structure and GLB/GLTF output for the target 3D experience.
  • ● Preserve accurate dimensions, proportions and appropriate levels of detail.
  • ● Develop realistic materials and textures that represent the physical product.
  • ● Remove unnecessary CAD elements and non-visible geometry while keeping the model true to the source.

Design & Delivery Process

Step Process Description
01 Review source data Review SolidWorks/STEP/IGES CAD files, product images and reference data.
02 Optimize geometry Simplify geometry and polygon count for web and AR performance.
03 Build materials Rebuild materials and textures for realistic digital representation.
04 Validate accuracy Verify dimensions, proportions and visible product details against source data.
05 Export GLB/GLTF Structure and export the optimized asset for web-based 3D use.
06 Quality check Validate the final model against the target platform’s published 3D requirements.

Interactive Product Experience

The final asset is structured to support an interactive e-commerce product experience, allowing shoppers to rotate, zoom and examine the product digitally. The presentation below uses a generic e-commerce interface to illustrate the experience without relying on third-party platform branding.

Value Delivered

    • ✔ A web-ready GLB/GLTF 3D model built directly from the customer’s existing CAD data.
    • ✔ An optimized asset prepared for an interactive product-listing experience and aligned with Amazon’s published 3D model requirements.
    • ✔ A repeatable CAD-to-3D conversion workflow that avoids the need for a separate 3D scanning session or product photoshoot.
    • ✔ A scalable approach for converting engineering data into customer-facing digital product content.
