On 21 August 2026 SAMR published recall notices from multiple manufacturers over emergency mechanical door releases that occupants and rescuers cannot readily identify or operate. Behind them sits GB 48001-2026, a mandatory national standard on automotive door handles already published and taking effect on 1 January 2027.
What Happened
The State Administration for Market Regulation published a batch of recall notices on 21 August 2026. Two Tesla recalls concern door releases: S2026M0098V covering 2,929,869 domestic vehicles (Model 3, 973,156 units built 4 March 2019 to 29 April 2026; Model Y, 1,956,713 units built 16 November 2020 to 30 April 2026) and S2026M0099V covering 46,041 imported vehicles (Model 3, 35,590; Model X, 8,328; Model S, 2,123) — a subtotal of 2,975,910. Xiaomi filed two recalls covering 390,435 SU7-series vehicles: S2026M0096V, 339,069 units built 8 August 2024 to 4 March 2026, and S2026M0097V, 51,366 units built 27 December 2023 to 16 August 2024. The defect wording in both cases is that the interior emergency mechanical release handle is close in colour to the surrounding trim and is difficult to identify and operate, so that in a severe collision disabling the low-voltage system occupant escape and outside rescue may be impeded. Remedies are a free warning label on the emergency handle plus an over-the-air update — a post-collision window-lowering strategy for Tesla, and optimised door-unlock logic and window control for Xiaomi.

- GB 48001-2026, 汽车车门把手安全技术要求 (Safety technical requirements for automotive door handle), is a mandatory national standard — no /T suffix — published on 28 January 2026 by SAMR together with the National Standardization Administration, with an implementation date of 1 January 2027.
- The standard is administered by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and was drafted by the Body Accessories Sub-Technical Committee of the National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization; Chinese Standard Classification Code T26.
- The 21 August recalls are enforcement against an identification and operability defect in the interior emergency mechanical release, not against flush exterior handles as such — the notices do not use the term 隐藏式门把手 (concealed door handle).
- Remedies are notably light-touch: a warning label plus a software update, rather than hardware replacement.
- Not every recall in the 21 August batch concerns door handles. Geely’s filings that day — 92,915 vehicles across Galaxy M9 and Lynk & Co 900, 10 EM-P, 07 and 08 — relate to a lidar internal power IC defect affecting combined driving assistance. Tesla’s third filing that day, S2026M0039I covering 2,740,642 vehicles, concerns driver-attention monitoring.
- Sourcing note: figures circulating in the press of roughly 4.27 million vehicles across nine manufacturers, or 7 million across thirteen, do not correspond to any single official SAMR aggregate notice. SAMR published these as separate per-manufacturer notices, and press accounts disagree with one another. The confirmed door-handle totals are the Tesla and Xiaomi figures above.

Prohibitions, Restrictions & Requirements
Recall remedies are required for the affected VINs. From 1 January 2027, door handle designs must meet GB 48001-2026 as a mandatory standard. The official pages give a single implementation date and do not distinguish new type approvals from vehicles already in production, so do not assume a separate later date for existing approvals.
What Companies Should Do
- Audit every China-market door system against GB 48001-2026 now rather than at type approval, and obtain the standard’s clause-level text from the official database rather than working from press summaries.
- Test the specific failure mode the recalls target: whether an untrained occupant can visually identify and operate the interior emergency mechanical release, particularly where it is colour-matched to trim. Colour contrast and labelling are the cheap fixes.
- Review your post-collision electrical strategy — both remedies included software changes to door-unlock or window behaviour after a crash, which suggests regulators regard that as part of the expected design.
- Assess whether the same designs are exposed in other markets. The UNECE emergency door opening work is moving in the same direction, so a China-only fix is likely to be repeated work.
The interesting part is not the recall volume, which the press has reported inconsistently, but the defect definition: a mechanical release that exists but cannot be found. That is a human-factors and labelling failure rather than a mechanism failure, and GB 48001-2026 makes it a type-approval matter from 1 January 2027.
