EPA Publishes Supplemental Exposure Data for DEHP Risk Evaluation
On July 24, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a supplemental memorandum providing expanded occupational exposure data for Di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). This update addresses data gaps identified in the June 2025 draft risk evaluation under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
Key Highlights of the Memorandum
• Detailed estimates of worker and non-user employee exposure in industrial settings
• Additional inhalation monitoring data and treatment of non-detectable samples in models
• Strengthening the scientific foundation for EPA’s final risk determination
Context: DEHP and Phthalate Risk Evaluations
DEHP is one of five phthalates under review alongside DBP, BBP, DIBP, and DCHP. Draft evaluations for DEHP and DBP are open for public comment until August 4, 2025.
Stakeholder Engagement and Peer Review
• Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) will review DEHP and DBP evaluations during a public meeting from August 4–8, 2025.
• An informational briefing for SACC and the public is set for July 21, 2025.
• Stakeholders are encouraged to submit comments and attend these sessions.
What Industry and Stakeholders Should Do
• Review the supplemental exposure memorandum and draft risk evaluations
• Submit comments by August 4, 2025 at docket EPA-HQ-OPPT-2018-0433
• Participate or monitor the SACC peer review process
Next Steps
Following review and comments, EPA will finalize the DEHP risk evaluation, which may lead to regulatory risk management actions affecting workplace safety and chemical use.
