The European Parliament has postponed the application date for the EU Deforestation Regulation by one year, giving companies more time to comply. Large operators and traders must now adhere to the rules by December 30, 2025, while micro- and small enterprises have until June 30, 2026.

Key Adjustments

• Extended Compliance Timeline: The delay addresses concerns from stakeholders about meeting regulatory requirements in time.
• "No-Risk" Country Category: Countries with no deforestation risk will face less stringent requirements, easing compliance for businesses sourcing from these regions.
• Country Benchmarking System: The European Commission will finalize a benchmarking system to classify countries by June 30, 2025.

Implementation Balance

The extended timeline aims to ensure effective implementation without compromising the regulation’s goals of combating deforestation. The introduction of risk-based categories allows for a more tailored approach, promoting sustainability while reducing unnecessary burdens on compliant nations.
