The European Union has taken major steps to enhance ethical and transparent mineral sourcing. It introduced the Responsible Mineral Information System (ReMIS) and formally recognised the first compliant due-diligence scheme under Regulation (EU) 2017/821.
First EU-Recognised Due-Diligence Scheme
On 17 October 2025, the European Commission officially recognised the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) as the first due-diligence scheme under the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation.
RMAP supports compliance for companies importing tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold (3TG) from conflict-affected and high-risk areas by providing robust supply chain risk controls and auditing mechanisms.
Key Facts:
• Scheme recognised: RMAP
• Regulation: Regulation (EU) 2017/821
• Metals covered: Tin, Tungsten, Tantalum, Gold (3TG)
• Recognition date: 17 October 2025
This recognition allows EU importers to rely on RMAP as a validated framework for demonstrating due-diligence obligations.
EU Launches ReMIS Platform for Transparency
On 2 October 2025, the EU launched the Responsible Mineral Information System (ReMIS), a voluntary platform enabling companies to publicly disclose responsible-sourcing commitments.
Platform Details:
• Platform: Responsible Mineral Information System (ReMIS)
• Launch date: 2 October 2025
• Participation: Voluntary
• Purpose: Public reporting of responsible-sourcing actions
Industry Impact
Companies importing or using critical minerals in the EU are encouraged to align with recognised due-diligence schemes and leverage ReMIS to demonstrate transparency to governments, investors, and stakeholders.
These initiatives mark a major advancement in the EU’s efforts to ensure ethical mineral supply chains and strengthen global sustainability standards.
