EU Moves to Modernise Car Labelling for Greener Choices
The European Commission has launched a major revision of the EU Car Labelling Directive (1999/94/EC) to improve transparency on fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. The update aims to help consumers make climate-friendly choices and support the EU’s sustainability and digital transition goals.
Evaluation Highlights Need for Digital & Harmonised Labelling
An official evaluation published on 11 June 2025 identified gaps in consistency across Member States and recommended integrating digital labelling formats. Harmonised and accessible information is seen as critical for providing consumers with clear, comparable vehicle data across the EU.
Public Consultation Open Until October 2025
To gather feedback from industry, consumer groups, and citizens, the Commission opened a public consultation on 7 July 2025. The consultation will close on 10 October 2025 and focuses on digital tools, updated labelling formats, and ways to enhance transparency for consumers and manufacturers.
Full Legislative Review Planned in 2026
As part of the Industrial Action Plan for the European automotive sector, the Directive will undergo a comprehensive review in 2026. The review is expected to align vehicle information rules with Europe’s climate and mobility objectives.
Driving Consumer Clarity and Environmental Progress
Updating car labelling requirements supports informed consumer decisions, encourages the adoption of low-emission vehicles, and accelerates the transition toward greener mobility in the EU.
