United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to go after its goal to protect human health and the environment by taking important action plans under the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), which will lead to advance Environmental Justice, improve transparency, and increase access to environmental information. “It was done in an act that each person of US has the right to know what kind of chemicals are being released in the community,” said the EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. The plan has the below key points:
1. To include facilities that are not currently reporting on ethylene oxide (EtO) releases as it causes harmful effects on human health including cancer and the environment. (EtO is employed to form other industrial chemicals and is additionally wont to sterilize medical devices).
2. Additional TRI Reporting Requirements for Natural Gas Processing Facilities, adding new per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), adding the chemical included in the TSCA work plan, and other substances designated as high-priority substances listed in TSCA to TRI.
3. Additional TRI Tools to make TRI data more accessible to the public. - include a Demographic Profile section which shows a map showing information like the income profile and the racial makeup surrounding TRI facilities, Launching a Spanish version of the TRI website, Promoting the use of Pollution Prevention (P2) information tool.
Background:TRI is a resource for knowing about annual chemical releases, waste management, and pollution prevention activities reported by nearly 22,000 industrial and federal facilities under EPA.
