Public Consultation Open for Feedback

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has launched a public consultation process to gather feedback on proposed scheduling decisions for five groups of chemicals under the Industrial Chemicals (International Uniform Chemical Evaluation and Management System) (IChEMS) framework.

Focus on HCB, PCBs, and PCTs

Among the chemicals under review are hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs). These substances have been recognized for their significant risks to human health and the environment. The proposed scheduling decisions aim to restrict or prohibit the use of these chemicals in Australia.

Call for Public Input

The consultation period is open until October 25, 2024, allowing stakeholders to voice their opinions and concerns. Interested parties are encouraged to submit feedback on the proposed scheduling decisions and associated risk management measures.

Additional Proposed Changes

In addition to the scheduling decisions, the DCCEEW is seeking input on proposed modifications to existing IChEMS standards for four groups of chemicals. These changes are intended to enhance the management and control of these substances within Australia.

Importance of Public Participation

This public consultation is a crucial step in ensuring that Australia's chemical management policies are based on robust scientific evidence and reflect the perspectives of all stakeholders. Participation in the consultation process allows individuals and organizations to help shape the future of chemical regulation in Australia.
