The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has announced plans to propose three substances as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) under the REACH Regulation. This move supports ongoing efforts to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals.

Chemicals Under Review

• 4,4'-Methylenediphenol: Used in resins and polymers; concerns about endocrine disruption.
• BPAF and salts: Related to BPA, suspected endocrine disruptor in high-performance polymers.
• DBDPE: Brominated flame retardant under review for persistence and bioaccumulation.

Public Consultation on DBDPE

ECHA will open a targeted public consultation on DBDPE to collect feedback ahead of its potential SVHC listing.

• Consultation Period: June 27 – August 11, 2025
• This consultation supports possible inclusion of DBDPE in Annex VI of the CLP Regulation.

Regulatory Impact

Listing as SVHC may result in:

• Inclusion in the REACH Candidate List
• Authorization requirements
• Increased supply chain scrutiny
• Industry incentives to seek safer alternatives

Industry Recommendations

Companies handling these substances should:

• Collect relevant data and assess impacts
• Monitor and participate in consultations
• Collaborate with downstream users on exposure
• Prepare for potential substitution or reformulation
