Original Enforcement Date: December 30, 2024
New Enforcement Date:

• Large operators and traders: December 30, 2025
• Micro and small enterprises: June 30, 2026

Overview

The EU Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) aims to curb global deforestation linked to EU consumption by imposing strict due diligence and traceability requirements on high-risk commodities.

The 12-month postponement was agreed upon to allow businesses and member state authorities more time to build the necessary infrastructure and ensure compliance readiness.

Scope of the Regulation

The list may be expanded based on evolving risk profiles and environmental assessments.

Compliance Requirements

To place or export these products in the EU, operators must ensure:

✅ Deforestation-free origin: No deforestation or forest degradation after 31 December 2020
✅ Legal compliance: Production must align with local laws in the country of origin
✅ Due Diligence Statement (DDS): Submitted via the EUDR Information System, containing:

• Geolocation coordinates of farm/plot
• Commodity and product specifications
• Confirmation of legality and traceability
• Proof of no post-2020 deforestation

Only products meeting all three conditions are allowed on the EU market.

Digital Compliance: The EUDR Information System

All DDS filings must be submitted digitally at:

• Production System: https://eudr.webcloud.ec.europa.eu/tracesnt/
• Testing Environment: https://acceptance.eudr.webcloud.ec.europa.eu/tracesnt/

Key submission components:

• Plot-level geolocation coordinates
• Product categorization
• Confirmation of legal harvesting and traceability

Capacity Building and Training Support

The EU will conduct live training sessions and release online modules to assist businesses in preparing for EUDR obligations.

Industry Takeaways & Recommended Actions

• Supply Chain Mapping: Identify all products and ingredients covered by the EUDR
• Geolocation Verification: Validate farm or forest plot locations used in sourcing
• Legal Due Diligence: Ensure local compliance for sourcing regions
• Stakeholder Training: Prepare internal teams and suppliers
• Digital Readiness: Familiarize with the EUDR Information System and DDS protocols

Strategic Significance

The EUDR is a landmark regulation that supports the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the Green Deal. While the enforcement delay offers more time, companies should use the extension to build robust compliance mechanisms and avoid trade disruptions in 2025–2026.
