The European Union's Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) list has been updated to include Methoxychlor (CAS 72-43-5). Added to Annex I on September 27, 2024, Methoxychlor joins a database that now contains 32 unique substances/entries as on 31 October 2024.

Methoxychlor, an insecticide known by trade names such as DMDT, Marlate®, and Metox®, is classified as:
• Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
• Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin.
• Suspected of causing damage to fertility or harming unborn children.
• Organ damage risk through prolonged exposure.
Common Uses
Methoxychlor has been widely used in agriculture and domestic settings, including:
• Controlling pests like flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches.
• Protecting crops, livestock, and grain storage.
• Application in gardens, animal feed, and on pets.
Regulatory Impact
Methoxychlor’s addition aligns with its inclusion in the ATSDR 2022 Substance Priority List and signals heightened regulatory scrutiny due to its persistent environmental impact and health hazards.
