Triphenyl Phosphate Identified as SVHC

On October 16, 2024, the Member State Committee (MSC) convened to address key regulatory matters, including the identification of triphenyl phosphate as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) due to its endocrine-disrupting properties in the environment. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is set to add triphenyl phosphate to the Candidate List in early November.

Approval of Alternative Testing Method

In a significant move towards ethical testing practices, the MSC unanimously approved the use of the non-vertebrate Hyalella Azteca test (HYBIT) as a standard information requirement under the REACH regulation, where applicable. This test, aligned with the recently published OECD Test Guideline 321, assesses the bioaccumulation potential of substances in aquatic environments without involving vertebrate animals, marking a progressive step in reducing animal testing.

Ongoing Review of Authorisation List Prioritisation

The committee also discussed the ongoing review of its prioritisation approach for substances proposed for inclusion in the Authorisation List. This topic will be further debated in the upcoming December meeting.
