The Government of Canada has adopted VOC regulations for certain products (consumer and commercial), which will be effective from 1 January 2023. An article on the regulation was published in the Canada Gazette on 5 January 2022.
These VOC regulations will apply to manufacturers and importers of products that are in-scope of the regulation. A total of 130 product categories have been identified and listed in the article with VOC concentration limits.
Products such as automotive and household maintenance products, adhesives & adhesive removers, sealants, and caulking agents are some of the product categories that would be regulated under the VOC law. Manufacturers and importers should make sure the date of manufacture is present on the product container physically or made accessible through the use of a code.
Manufacturers and importers are prohibited from selling products that exceed VOC limits unless a permit is obtained. However, the concentration limits for VOCs will come into force only from 1 January 2024 for all product categories, except for disinfectants, which are scheduled to be effective from 1 January 2025.
