A 60 days consultation will run on the initial scientific evaluations of Glyphosate by ECHA and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as well as all interested parties. Both of the initial scientific assessments that were published today for consultation were prepared by the evaluation committee on Glyphosate (AGG), which comprises national competent authorities in France, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Each Agency will consider the comments relevant to his or her respective process.

For the harmonized classification process, the Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) & ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) will consider the comments and data submitted. These considerations are going to be taken forward when RAC develops its opinion on the classification of glyphosate under the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.

The classification of chemicals is only based upon the hazardous properties of a substance not the use or likelihood of exposure of a substance. (Note: Exposure is taken into account as a part of the danger assessment of pesticide active substances, a process led by EFSA)

The current harmonized classification of Glyphosate is causing eye damage also as toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. The initial scientific evaluation from the AGG doesn't recommend a change to the prevailing classification. Classification for germ cell mutation, cancer, or reproductive toxicity is not guaranteed.

After ECHA’s opinion on the classification of glyphosate, EFSA will take the outcome into account in its review and is expected to finalize its work in the second half of 2022. The approval of Glyphosate for use in the EU will then decide by the European Commission with the risk managers from the 27 EU Member States.
