IUCLID 6.9 Released with Major Updates for Microplastics and Regulatory Compliance
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched IUCLID 6.9, an important upgrade to its chemical data management software. This new version improves regulatory compliance and data harmonization across the EU and OECD frameworks.
Key Enhancements in IUCLID 6.9
1. Microplastics Reporting Under REACH
IUCLID 6.9 introduces a dedicated module for reporting synthetic polymer microparticles (microplastics) as required by the EU REACH Regulation. Manufacturers and importers must submit annual reports detailing polymer identity, particle size, shape, functional use, and quantities placed on the market. The first report covers 2026, due by 31 May 2027.
2. Support for Drinking Water Directive Compliance
The update adds features to facilitate submissions for notifications of intention under the EU Drinking Water Directive. It includes a detailed manual, validation tools, and a dissemination preview to ensure accurate public information ahead of the first 2026 notification period.
3. Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) Enhancements
IUCLID 6.9 offers improved data structures and new templates reflecting Annex II and III requirements. These changes streamline reporting on microbial products, components, manufacturers, and risk mitigation measures.
4. New Hazard Classifications Integration
The platform supports new hazard classes under the CLP Regulation, including PBT, vPvB, PMT, and vPvM, now integrated into Poison Centre Notification formats.
5. OECD Guideline Alignment
The update aligns IUCLID with OECD test guidelines, adding sections for in vitro immunotoxicity, nanomaterial size distribution, and extended reproductive toxicity. Reporting structures for toxicokinetics and ecotoxicological studies have been refined, including test guideline 125 for nanomaterial characterization.
User Experience and Technical Improvements
• Enhanced User Interface: Inline editing within tables and improved handling of ‘Other’ entries boost usability.
• Report Generation: New templates simplify creation of Classification and Labelling dossiers.
• Technical Support: Support for Mac OS local installations and Derby databases has ended; migration to PostgreSQL is recommended for server environments.
IUCLID 6.9 marks a significant advancement in chemical data management, helping industry and regulators meet evolving requirements efficiently. Stakeholders should explore the new features to ensure smooth compliance and reporting under the updated regulations.
