EU added 4 new substances to the ROHS substances of very high concern list, also now referred to as ROHS 3 or EU directive 2015/863.
Previously ROHS had only 6 SVHC on their list. They are
- Cadmium
- Lead
- Mercury
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)
The new substances that are added are:
- Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
- Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) of phthalates groups
Except Cadmium, all other 9 SVHC substance are restricted to use only by 0.1 % or 1000 ppm by weight of the total homogenous material. For Cadmium it is 0.01 % or 100 ppm.
ROHS 3 has added 11 categories of products in their list. These include electronic and electrical equipment not covered under the other categories such as
- 2-wheeled vehicles
- Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) such as e-cigarettes, cannabis vaporizers and vape pens
- Electrical cables that are rated for less than 250V (working voltage)
