The Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO) have introduced mandatory regulations over electrical and electronic equipment, which are manufactured, imported, or distributed in the Kingdom of Saud Arabia. The same is introduced under the mandatory regulatory program, “SASO Product Safety Program” (SPSP). The law is simply called Saudi RoHS, which is almost similar to EU RoHS. The law restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and it defines conformity assessment procedures for suppliers.
Below is the list of substances that are regulated under Saudi RoHS, which are covered under six product categories.
- 1. Lead (Pb)
- 2. Mercury (Hg)
- 3. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)
- 4. Cadmium (Cd)
- 5. Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE)
- 6. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
The law was officially published in the Saudi Gazette on July 9, 2021, and the concerned stakeholders have to take corrective action within no more than 180 days as of the date of publication in the Official Gazette, which is January 5, 2022.
However, SASO has decided to extend the deadline for further 6 months and the regulation will be implemented in phases a shown in the below table.
PHG for PFOA and PFOS
A PHG is the position of a drinking water adulterant at which adverse health goods aren’t anticipated to do from a continuance of exposure. As per the epidemiologic verified that operation of PFOA increases the threat of order cancer it’s associated with liver and vulnerable system toxin and increased total cholesterol, and there’s suggestive substantiation of an association with the threat of preeclampsia and gestation-related hypertension. PFOS is associated with vulnerable system toxins and increased total cholesterol in humans, with suggestive substantiation of an association with the threat of preeclampsia and gestation-related hypertension.
The specialized support document presents the scientific information available on the toxin of PFOA and PFOS, and the computation of the proposed PHGs. Please table below shows the cure responses for PFOA and PFOS, proposed by PHG and Health defensive attention.
