Council presidency and European Parliament reached a provisional agreement to update the list of priority substances in surface and groundwater. This move revises environmental quality standards, adds new pollutants, and aligns EU water policy with the latest scientific research.

The updated priority substances now include pesticides, pharmaceuticals, bisphenols, and a significant expansion of PFAS-related chemicals, notably adding trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to the PFAS group. The agreement sets a new sum standard of 0.2 µg/l for pesticides in surface waters and designates Bisphenol-A as a priority hazardous substance.

In contrast, substances such as atrazine have been removed due to decreased environmental relevance, while standards for others have been tightened following updated scientific advice. Member states will also adopt advanced monitoring techniques and increase reporting frequency to enhance transparency and water management across the EU.

The updated standards will be integrated into river basin management plans to ensure coordinated protection of water resources. The provisional agreement awaits formal endorsement by the Council and European Parliament, with member states required to transpose the directive into national law by December 21, 2027.

This landmark update is a key step forward in the EU’s commitment to safeguard water quality, reduce harmful chemical pollution, and promote sustainable water management practices.
