Graphene nanotubes in medical devices

● OCSiAL, a Chinese company manufactures Luxembourg - silicone rubber that is used in electrical devices for massage treatment.

● The company decided to use graphene nanotubes over existing silver-based additives for the manufacture of medical devices.

● These nanotubes help in retaining the original softness and flexibility of the silicone rubber, whereas the silver-based additives present challenges in mixing and processing.

● The use of carbon black causes human skin contamination and lowers rubber flexibility which graphene does not cause.

● In addition, 0.25% of graphene nanotubes replace 40% of carbon black.

● Hence, the EU RoHS directive allowed the manufacturer to enter the European market.
