New Additions to EU’s PIC Regulation

The European Union has officially added 40 new chemicals to the list of substances under its Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation. These chemicals are now included in Annex I of the regulation, which governs the export and import of hazardous chemicals, ensuring that both the exporting and importing countries are fully informed about the chemicals being traded.

Key Details on the Addition of 40 Chemicals

The addition of these substances to Annex I signifies a critical step in enhancing global chemical safety and transparency. The PIC Regulation, which is part of the EU’s Regulation (EC) No. 689/2008, requires that certain hazardous chemicals are only allowed to be exported to non-EU countries once the importing country has explicitly consented to their import. This procedure aims to ensure that chemicals that are deemed dangerous or are subject to severe restrictions within the EU are managed responsibly when traded internationally.

Implications for Companies

The update means that businesses involved in the export or import of these 40 chemicals must comply with the EU’s notification requirements and receive prior consent from the importing country before shipping these substances. Companies should review the updated list and ensure that their trade practices align with the regulations set forth in the PIC framework.

Increased Oversight for Hazardous Chemicals

The inclusion of these chemicals into the PIC Regulation strengthens the EU’s commitment to global chemical safety, ensuring that both environmental and public health considerations are prioritized in international chemical trade. Companies operating in the EU or dealing with chemical exports to non-EU countries should stay informed about these changes to avoid compliance issues and ensure safe handling of these chemicals.
